So it was all rough and tumble and just fucking grin and go for it. That’s all it was to us. ’ For Malcolm it was almost a dumbing-down exercise, although the attraction was simple; he and Angus loved the way rock and roll was played, the subtle techniques involved that only made it seem basic. Steve Morcom recalls a conversation with Angus about Yes and their guitarist Steve Howe. ” But he meant it in a really positive way and I knew Malcolm was well up on that [more complex material] and could pull stuff off like that.

You’re gonna come back there anyway,’ Malcolm told David Horowitz in Juke on 23 February 1991, ‘so why leave in the first place? ’ While Status Quo, Slade and Foghat were popular, Malcolm had something more grassroots in mind. With the enormous impact of Muddy Waters’ Australian tour in May 1973 still bouncing off many a musician’s household wall, Malcolm wanted to reclaim the lost art of real rock and roll, of the raw energy, emotion and drive of Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Beatles’ rock and roll songs like Get Back, and, of course, the Stones stripped bare of hippy bullshit and druggy excesses.

For that reason, songs by Mountain, Cactus, Argent, Deep Purple, Ursa Major (it’s said that Angus once jammed with guitarist Dick Wagner, later of Alice Cooper and Lou Reed fame, in Melbourne), Hendrix, the Stones, and from Jeff Beck’s Truth and Beck-Ola era, all made appearances in their sets. Rehearsals were on Sundays, or more regularly as the need arose, in a scout hall next to busy Concord Road in Rhodes adjacent to a major bridge, the same place Malcolm rehearsed in. When they really wanted to tighten up they would shift into the hall’s small kitchen where the sound wouldn’t be lost.
